Thursday 13- Aug 23 13 Things on my Fridge

Think of this as a hidden picture. Try to locate the items I describe

1. Postcard of Sigfried and Roy before one of them got munched by a tiger.
2. Stamps from the Georgia Republic featuring Bill and Monica in cartoon form. Sorry Hillary.
3.An untrasound of my uterus without a baby in it.
4. A magnet made by an artist in Santa Fe that is his self-portait with green flames coming out of the head and naked women behind him. The picture looks just like my husband.
5. A magent of a housewife in her green dress that says “ask me how I suffered.”
6. A picture of someone’s car that was spraypainted by a pissed of woman. It reads “Hope that pussy was worth it, bastard.” I dont think she was very happy about that one.
7. Sherpa thongs from a catalog. My department head left this in my box with a note saying that my husband is probably the only person who would wear these. She is wrong because he wouldnt wear thongs and obviously others wear them or they wouldnt be in a catalog. Nice thought though.
8. A very interesting HIV awareness ad. The man is very good looking but sitting in diapers. The ad says something about HIV not being pretty and that sometimes, he craps in his pants and has to wear a diaper. I thoght it was a great ad.
9. A postcard of a woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty. She asks for us to give her our lily white asses longing to be free.
10. A picture of a very large man who is wearing a shirt that says “I beat anorexia.”

11. A 3-d picture of the last pope. He looks so young and healthy in that picture. That is how I want to remember him. Oh, and I have a pope-on-a-rope in my shower.
12. A picture of Miss Cleo- the world’s best psychic.
13. A postcard from Pop Pops reminding us of the fun and good flavors we are missing by not living in NM. We want to open a pop-pop franchise. It is a great, weird flavored shaved ice. Not your usual shaved ice. And sometimes, they go crazy and pour it over soft serve ice cream.

Book It

I shall take this from Connie and go with it..

1) A book that changed my life: “Letters to a Young Poet” (Rilke). My uncle gave this book to me during a time when I was questiong a lot about my life. It gave me perspective on my family. I think he read the book for answers to similar questions. Also, “Way of the Peaceful Warrior (Millman).” The book is about to be made into a horrible film with Nick Nolte. But the book and the ones that followed were really touching.

2) A book I have read more than once: “The Mists of Avalon (Zimmer Bradley)”. I love a good Arthurian tale and this one tops my list. It it set at the time when Christianity rolled right over Pagan Sprituality.

3) A book to take to a deserted island: “Kushiel’s Dart (Carey)” and the rest of the series. It is a great fantasy world painted in those pages. And a little kinky.

4) A book that made me laugh: ‘Found” and “Found II.” People keep asking where I get those great notes. Go to the site and find your own funny ones. Also “A girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing (Bank).” Find out what vaginas of the sea are.

5) A book that made me cry: “The Poisonwood Bible (Kingsolver).” She told an incredible story of a very interesting family.

6) A book I wish had been written: “How to make a million bucks by reading a paperback.”

7) A book I wish had never been written: Most of that chick-lit with a cool picture that draws us women in and then crappy nothingness inside.
8)
A book I am currently reading: “From Beirut to Jerusalem (Friedman).” A little light reading on Middle East politics.

9) A book I’m planning on reading: anything that comes my way. I read a book every 2-3 days. It is an expensive habit.

10) A favorite book not already listed: I have a few. 1. “Daughters of the Forest (Marillier)”; “The Mermaid Singing (Carey)”; “She’s Come Undone (Lamb)”.

So, if you are done reading this, consider yourself tagged!

Great Shopping

Sorry I have been quiet this week. I am back to work and getting ready for the Fall semester. It is a lot of work.
I thought I would post a few companies to check out for your shopping expeditions. Do check my shopping links below. These are a few that I think are just groovy. Always remember- order a catalog if they have one. Have fun and tell me what you think. If there is somewhere you think I should be shopping, let me know.

Red Envelope (I cant post the link cause it is specific to the user. Google it) – They have great gifts and some cute Asian items perfect for your child.
Magic Cabin- more hippy dolls and fairies and cool wooden toys. No guns or crap like that. Check out their Asian dolls!
Garnet Hill- great natural fiber stuff for home, adult and baby.
Cath Kidston- You to can be retro and groovy and trendy all in one.
Hearthsong- They have great kid’s toys like Magic Cabin and a cool sale section.
Little Buddha Baby- great baby clothing but they dont have a full range of sizes. Love their stuff.
Northern Sun- Wonderful, politically cool shirts, bumper stickers and other goodies.
Archie McPhee- This has the best toys for your desk at work.

Ode to Kermit

So, this is my cat Kermit. It is rare to catch Kermit in a position other than spread out all over the bed. Yes, we do make our beds around here, but with this many animals, someone is bound to nest in the covers during the day.

We got Kermit from the Humane Society where we got Lumpy from. He is currently 6 years old. Unfortunately, Kermit had his claws removed and apparently, almost lost his feet because of a screw-up in the surgery. I had to pull glue off of him the first 6 months that we had him.

Kermit likes to whine about everything. He likes to be in charge. So, if I walk into the bathroom to pee, Kermit will jump on the sink and whine for water. He might not be thirsty but he will act like he is. If we go to the fridge, he will sneak up next to us and cry for new food. He is really a nosey cat that way.

Two years ago, Kermit had to start Asthma meds. We started him on a inhaler but that didn’t work. Oral meds didnt work so we went to injections. Unfortunately, they may cause other bad side effects down the line. It may be the case that we have to put him down early because of them. We will cross that bridge when we need to. Right now, he will wheeze and sound like he is coughing up a hairball all night long. He also doesn’t groom himself very well. So now we pin him down and brush his soft white belly.

Kermit is the alpha cat in the house. This is ironic for a number of reasons: 1. He is a wimp and complains about everything, 2. He has no claws, 3. He is the smallest cat in the house. So, how he gained alpha status is beyond me.

Thursday 13- August 17- 13 Current Quirks

This is my first post as an official member so I am going to keep this one on the personal side today.

13 Current Quirks
1. My drink of the night consists of Key West Lime Juice with a Chinese soup spoon full of sugar, lots of ice and a good helping of either water or sparkling water.

2. I bought 20 tubes of Breath Palette toothpaste at a fancy beauty supply house in California so I can brush my teeth with a different flavor every day. My current favorites are Kishu Ume (Japanese plum), Amajio (sweet salt), Darleeling tea, Kyoho (grape), honey and Ichibanzumi green tea. They make me want to brush my teeth all day long.

3. I am still majorly into Dog the Bounty Hunter. I can’t wait to see their wedding (I have it on the DVR to watch later). I think Beth and I would get along well. I would be willing to get my hair done with her if it meant hanging out with them. Oh Justin, what did you do wrong to be tossed aside?

4. Tim bought me Sirius satallite radio for my birthday and I spend 99% of my time on Howard Stern. I am a big fan and have been since I was in junior high school. I find him to be a very kind man with a very funny and dirty sense of humor. Listening to Howard as I drive 55 miles each way to work makes me a little less nutty about the commute. I am sorry Beth O broke her food and that Gary’s father passed away.

5. I won the “Shoe Goddess” award from Kim and Donna at work. They had it first and now it has been passed down to me. My new favorites are a pair of van style Sketchers that are black with embroidered dragons on them. I also have a new pair of hot pink mules with ladybugs on the bottom (getting squished with every step).

6. Last night, while watching “So You Think You Can Dance,” I got Harry and Lumpy (the cats) so dizzy with the laser pointer, that I actually got them to crash into each other. It is hard to play with the laser with the cats, because my big, fat dog, Ginger, likes it equally. The cats want nothing to do with the laser when the 90 pound dog is running like a crazy woman.

7. I now sleep with ear pillows in my ears. I am a poor sleeper and I have a hard time staying asleep. I used to be an ambien user but now I just need the ear pillows. I used earplugs for a while and went to the doctor cause of an ear infection. She told me I need to stop shoving ear plugs into my ears and turned me on to ear pillows. They are soft wads of wax. I shove those in the outer ear and call it a day. When I go to bed at night, I always start off by thinking about Hawaii. I would like to move there soon.

8. I have collected baby name books for years. My current count is 116 books. I could help you name your Arab child, your Indian child, and your queer baby. I can also help with what not to name your child. I love these books. They have helped for years with hedgehog names. Oddly, we chose the name for our future child without the help of a book. Though, I am still scanning the pages for an “I” name.

9. My entire top collection is in rainbow order in my closet. It makes me happy when I walk in there. I have a summer and a winter wardrobe that I rotate in the closet. I tell myself I am a minimalist and weed through the clothing whenever possible, but the truth is I am not a minimalist. I would, however, prefer to spend $100 on one great item then to buy a bunch of crap. I would also consider myself a label whore.

10. I have decided that the next quilt I make will be a star quilt of Southwest/ Dia de los Muertos fabric. I am going to paper piece it (doing this without a paper foundation is suicide. How would one ever match the points just right?). I have saved a lot of cool fabric and I am invisioning the print fabric in the center of a four pointed star with a dark black print as the background fabric. I bought some orange and turquoise watercolor fabric for the background but I just dont like it enough and it will clash with the prints. So, maybe I will make a few stars out of that. This project may take me a while. I am about to start teaching again.

11. I like to put things in containers. I read somwhere that men prefer to put things on shelves and women prefer to put things in boxes with lids. I have containers for the following items- spices, quilting fabric, embossing powder and general scrapbooking stuff, kid’s stuff, DVDs, laundry crap, and I keep all important papers in labeled hanging file folders.

12. My current hair color is dark chocolate brown. I am not sure if this is a good color on me. I have received zero positive or negative feedback regarding it (which is usually an indication that folks don’t like it). I have started using Nice and Easy for old people who have too much gray hair. I am currently in the old people category. It seems to stain the shit out of my hair and therefore, the color stays for a much longer time. And, it leave lovely gray marks on my forehead, ears and fingers. Can’t ask for more.

13. I am trying to find the right feeding and water container for my hedgehogs that live in kiddie swimming pools. I can’t attach a water bottle because the little buggers find a way to climb up it and out the top. Yesterday, I picked up those feeders that one would use for chickens. This morning, they were empty and knocked over. I will tape them tonight to a plate. They need some bottom weight to them. I will work on this until I go crazy or until I find a better solution. Life is hard.

Lovely Children’s Books

Tim and I have been having some fun at the thrift stores finding funny children’s books. I think some folks had a weird sense of humor in the 1970’s because some of these books are just odd. Here are a few we have picked up.

Jesus Coloring book- Does Jesus forgive you if you color outside of the lines?

Ten Black Dots- Forget frogs and puppies, kids just love to count black dots.

Something Queer at the Ball Park- Very odd name for the book. This is a good lesson for kids- there is something “queer” out there. Watch out!

The Christmas Revolution- The poor kids that celebrate Christmas are thrown for a loop when a Jewish kid shows up at their school. How will they cope? Does he have horns?

The Mask of the Red Death- Now, who doesn’t want to put their baby to sleep with a little tale of a plague that kills everyone? Children love fantasy, right?

So, I challenge you to go out and find your own $.29 cent wonder. Let me know if you find a goofy kids book!
